For Your Consideration

What ails this country will not be cured by angry rhetoric, the pulling down of statues, or trying to erase history. You can sweep dust under a carpet, but you can see the lump. You can deny or hide history, but it is still there. We can shout down the opposition, while they, in turn, shout us down. We can protest, point out each other deficiencies, but in the end what has been accomplished?

Perhaps we feel good briefly, believe we’ve made a difference, and brought about change; however, the reality is, nothing has changed. You can pull a weed out of your yard, but it comes back, often bigger and stronger. The problems facing this nation are similar. We pull the weed of the moment quickly, removing the problem briefly, then are surprised when it springs up later.

How did we get here? How did we become such an angry, hateful, self-absorbed, lonely, isolated, people, looking for the quick fix, feel good temporary solutions? If we take a long look at ourselves we would see we are not right in the head, or heart. We are searching for something this world does not provide: peace and understanding.

We as a nation have turned from God, ridiculed Him, removed Him from schools, businesses and, for the most part public life, I would argue we have removed Him from our private lives, as well, but that is between you and God. How can we find solution to our anger, hatred, loneliness and feelings of worthlessness, if we have no foundation to base those solutions?

The answer, as unpopular as it may be, is the Bible, and Jesus Christ. He has experienced everything we have, and believe it or not He volunteered to do it. Jesus died for you, who do you know that would do that for you? We have a fog in our head and a hole in our hearts. We hope that by filling the hole, we will clear our thoughts, but we look to money, sports, movies, the famous, politicians, a new job, a promotion, a current, or new relationship to complete us; these are not the answer. For true clarity, for true wholeness we need look no further than Jesus. Only He can fill the emptiness that consumes you, only He help you see through the clouds of deception, anger, and hate.

This country does not need statues torn down, new political leaders, a new tax code, amendments to the Constitution, a re-write of history, or protesters filling the streets point out the various evils that are destroying our society and country. What is needed is a good, old fashioned revival. Throw away the signs, dial back the anger and hatred towards one another, stop the screaming, and get on your knees and silently pray to a loving God for forgiveness, wholeness, an understanding of others, and ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior.

As a Christian life doesn’t become easier, just clearer. Use that clarity to make a real difference in the lives around you.

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
